Marilee Abernathy thought she had it all, married to the local Baptist minister and busy with all the charity work that comes with that. Then her world comes crashing in. Her husband leaves her for another woman, the church fires him and evicts them from their house, and her fifteen-year-old son decides to go with his dad.

Marilee tries to commit suicide and luckily is unsuccessful. But the attempt is the beginning of Marilee getting her life back. With the help of her neighbor, bad boy Sam Brewer, she’s ready to get her life back.

Sam has come home to take care of his mother and between her and his crazy ex-wife who won’t leave him alone, the last thing he needs is another troubled woman. But there’s something about Marilee that keeps drawing him back.

In a tale rife with humor and emotion, Ms. Hughes demonstrates a great flair for storytelling. With well-crafted characters and delightful banter, this is just plain fun! (Oct., 384 pp., $5.99)
